Dr. Holly Wheeler is unique in that not only is she a female in a very highly male dominated field, but she also is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (rather than a Doctor of Medicine, or MD) which makes up only about 10% of physicians.
In the first half of the episode, you’ll hear Dr. Wheeler explain what a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine does, how she grew up in a very small town where the women in her life served as her inspiration, and how she helps Community East’s medical residents as they transition into becoming full-time doctors and the things they go through in residency.
In the second half of our conversation with Dr. Wheeler, you’ll hear her speak about some of the things that she’s learned from the mentors in her life and how her path to becoming a doctor didn’t go exactly as she had planned, but it allowed her to gain additional skills and knowledge along the way.
